KNITTED NIGHTINGALE SHAWL

Materials:

4 – 50 gram balls for three-quarter sleeves OR
5 – 50 gram balls for long sleeve style
2 – No. 10 (3 ¼ mm) knitting needles  AND
2 – No. 1 (7 ½ mm) knitting needles

Or whichever knitting needles you require to produce the tension given below.

Tension
:

7 stitches and 9 rows = 2 inches ( 5 cm ) with No. 1 (7 ½  mm) knitting needles in stocking stitch.

Measurement:

Length at centre back 20 inches ( 51 cm ).

Pattern:

With No. 10 (3 ¼ mm) knitting needles cast on 40 stitches and work 4 inches ( 10 cm ) in (Knit 2, Pearl 2) ribbing.

Next row:  Increase 1 stitch in each stitch to end of row (80 stitches on needle).

Next row:  Knit.

Change to No 1 (7 ½ mm) knitting needles and continue even in garter stitch (plain knitting every row) until work measures 46 inches ( 117 cm ) from beginning for three-quarter sleeves or 54 inches ( 137 cm ) for long sleeves.

Change to No. 10 (3 ¼ mm) knitting needles and proceed: —

Next row:  *Knit 2 together. Repeat from * to end of row.

Work 4 inches ( 10 cm ) in (Knit 2, Pearl 2) ribbing.

Cast off loosely in ribbing. Sew cuff seam. Sew approximately 5 inches ( 13 cm ) above cuff to form sleeve.


BED JACKET PATTERN

This jacket fits like a shawl with cuffs.

MATERIALS:

8 balls ( 50 g / 1¾ oz) Astra or 978 m ( 1,068 yds ) of any double knitting weight yarn
3.25 mm (size 3
US ) and 4.0 mm (size 6 US ) needles or the size you require to obtain the correct tension.

TENSION:

24 sts. = 10 cm (4") on 4.0 mm (size 6 US ) needles

 With 3.25 mm (size 3 US ) needles, cast on 60 sts. and work 10 cm (4") in (K1, P1) ribbing.

Next Row: K1, increase in every stitch to end (119 sts. now on needle).

Change to 4.0 mm (size 6 US ) needles and work in patterns as follows:

First row: (wrong side) K5, P to last 5 sts, K5.

Second row: K6, *yfwd, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, yfwd, K1, repeat from * to last 5 sts, K5.

Third row: K5, P to last 5 sts, K5.

Fourth row: K7, *yfwd, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yfwd, K3, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K4.

These 4 rows form the patterns. Repeat them until work measures 127 cm (50"), ending after a wrong side row.

Change to 3.25 mm (size 3 US ) needles.

Next row
: K1, *P2tog, repeating from * to last 2 sts, P2tog.

Begin (K1, P1) ribbing and continue for 10 cm (4"). Cast off in rib.

To Finish: For each sleeve, sew ribbing and 25 cm (10") of sleeve seam together to form the sleeve.
